Coffee in the morning to help meet the day
Coffee at night to help me stay awake
I don't care too much for sleeping
Especially these days
And I don't want a thing in my way
And I feel like someone shot at me again
Things don't look right and people stare at me
And there's lots of honest faces
With their guns strapped tight and low
You can't get away from the feeling behind you
I took a bullet in Kansas City two years last fall
There was gun smoke from the doorway
And footsteps down the hall
I cursed in pain and anger but got up on my own
And left town bleeding all alone
And I feel like someone shot at me again
Things don't look right and people stare at me
And there's lots of honest faces
With their guns strapped tight and low
You can't get away from the feeling behind you
I never sit close to the campfire at night
I sit right beyond the firelight just out of sight
And I settle down for another sleepless night
With my 44 cocked by my side
Listening for a sound I've heard a dozen times before
And I feel like someone shot at me again
Things don't look right and people stare at me
And there's lots of honest faces
Who'll shoot you in the dark
You can't get away from the feeling behind you
